A strong science program, small class sizes, and the ability to actually know your professors were some of the criteria I used while looking for colleges, and St. Lawrence offers them all.  Through the biology department, I have taken great classes, participated in the Denmark summer program, and conducted summer research with Dr. Kari Heckman as a SLU Fellow.  The goal of my summer research was to determine the optimal dose and administration of cerium oxide nanoparticles in order to treat Multiple Sclerosis.  For my SYE, I will be characterizing immune cell populations in mice to determine whether the nanoparticles themselves elicit an immune response, or if they have an impact on vaccination effectiveness.  After graduation, I hope to attend medical school.
