St. Lawrence News

St. Lawrence University has approved Beta Theta Pi fraternity's plan to recolonize its Beta Zeta Chapter on campus, Vice President and Dean of Student Life Joe Tolliver has announced.

The announcement to the campus community follows:

To: The St. Lawrence Community
From: Vice President and Dean of Student Life Joe Tolliver
Date: May 4, 2009
Subject: Beta Theta Pi

I write to provide an update on the status of conversations with the leadership of Beta Theta Pi fraternity.

In 2005, St. Lawrence's chapter of Beta Theta Pi was suspended by the University, acting upon a recommendation of the national. That decision included consideration of re-colonization in 2008.

During the fall 2008 semester, representatives visited campus and held discussions with the administration, as well as with alumni and students, to determine how best to proceed.

The national's Board of Trustees has endorsed a plan to restart the Beta Zeta Chapter at St. Lawrence in the fall of 2009; we have agreed to the plan as well. Briefly, the plan includes the following:

1. Member recruitment will take place on campus during the fall of the 2009-10 year using the Men of Principle initiative as a framework. If you wish to learn more about this initiative, you may read about it online.

2. The fraternity will recruit and train a full five-person advisory team (from alumni, faculty, community members, etc.) before beginning member recruitment.

3. Alumni organization and leadership will be formalized in order to increase communication, engagement and fundraising.

4. The national will seek financial support to hire a full-time Beta Theta Pi staff member to work in Canton for 2009-10.

Because all housing decisions will have been made before this recruitment process begins, the reconstituted Beta Theta Pi will not have a dedicated house for 2009-2010. Future options will be considered as we see the success of the process. I will provide more detail as plans take shape in the fall, but in the meantime, I am available to answer questions any member of the community may have.
