Michael Trembley '09, of Syracuse, won first prize for the best poster presented at the recent Northern New York Local Section of the American Chemical Society Undergraduate and Graduate Chemistry Research Symposium. Trembley was one of seven St. Lawrence students presenting posters or making an oral presentation at the symposium.

Trembley's poster was titled "What role do the 14-3-3 proteins, Bmh1p and Bmh2p, play in transcriptional regulation of genes in S. cerevisiae yeast under a nutrient-limited environment?" It included work done by Jonathan Whicher '08; Trembley and Whicher worked with Assistant Professor of Chemistry Emily Dixon on the project.

Other students presenting at the symposium, along with faculty co-authors and project titles, were:

  • Kristin Berretta '10, Pointe-Claire, Quebec (Samantha Glazier): Chemical models of anti-cancer pharmaceuticals based on ruthenium compounds with organic side chains
  • Nick Lovejoy '09, Natick, MA, (Larry French): Identification of route specific impurities present in 4-bromo-2,5-dimethoxyphenethyl-amine (2C-B) prepared via PIHKAL synthesis
  • Eric Clark '09, Montpelier, VT, (Carolyn Johns and Matthew Skeels): Total Cadmium, Copper, and Zinc in Dreissena Polymorpha and Dreissena Rostriformis Bugensis in the St. Lawrence River.
  • Marcus Tuttle '10, Gouverneur, NY, (Neil Law): The design, synthesis and characterization of novel 12-MC-4 complexes
  • Brendan Mitchell '09, Somers, NY, (Neil Law): Formation and characterization of copper (II) metallacrowns by use of 2-methoxybenzohydroxamic acid and its derivatives
  • Matthew Millard '09, Maitland, Ontario, (Samantha Glazier): Kinetic interactions of nogalamycin's binding with DNA
