St. Lawrence Trustee Elinor Tatum '93 received a Member of Distinction Award at the Pi Beta Phi fraternity's annual convention, held recently in Texas. The organization states that the award is "presented to highly accomplished members."

Tatum is publisher and editor-in-chief of the New York Amsterdam News, the oldest and largest Black newspaper in New York City, and one of the oldest in the country. She was appointed to her current position in 1997, and became one of the youngest publishers in Black press history. She also produces and co-hosts a weekly segment of Al Sharpton's radio show "Keepin' It Real," inviting members of the Black press to discuss national issues facing the African-American community. Tatum has also been a guest host on the WWRL radio morning and afternoon drive programs, and made appearances on television programs "The O'Reilly Factor," "20/20," "The Today Show" and "NBC Nightly News."

A speaker in the University's Contemporary Issues Forum in 2009, Tatum appears on the cover of the spring 2009 issue of the Harlem Torch quarterly magazine.
