Professors, Student Present at Regional Geology Meeting

Visiting Assistant Professor of Geology David Kratzmann and Professor Emeritus of Geology Mark Erickson recently presented their work at the 48th annual meeting of the Northeastern Section of the Geological Society of America in Bretton Woods, N.H.

Kratzmann presented research on the potential experiential learning applications for aquaponics systems (symbiotic fish and plant production) in geology and biology research and teaching. During the 2012-13 academic year, Kratzmann and Associate Professor of Biology Lorraine Olendzenski have been operating a 250-gallon aquaponics system in St. Lawrence’s greenhouse.

Erickson continued to summarize his studies of paleoclimate in northern New Jersey by presenting results of a study of the pollen fossil record for the past 18,000 years at Glovers Pond, a site he and geology students have documented in several ways over the years.

Peter Christoffersen ’13 also presented a poster on his senior thesis work with the Carthage-Colton Shear Zone.  Sam Lagor ’13 and Alex Leich ’13 also attended the event.

The meeting included more than 1,200 attendees.
