Lorien Eck M'06, of Los Angeles, CA, has received certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). She is one of 7,700 teachers nationwide to achieve National Board Certification in 2006, and the only known St. Lawrence graduate to receive the certification.

Eck is a visual arts teacher at John Muir Middle School and earned her bachelor's degree at San Francisco State University.

According to the NBPTS, certification is "a voluntary process established by the NBPTS, achieved through a rigorous, performance-based assessment that typically takes more than a year to complete and measures what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do. Teachers who earn this advanced teaching credential are among the best-qualified in the nation to improve instruction, raise student achievement, and improve teaching practices in their classrooms, schools and districts."

Eck was named Los Angeles Teacher of the Year in 2005-2006; she participated in her professional semester at St. Lawrence in 2001, as a graduate student.
