Marc Delaney '13, of Clayton, N.Y., has
Marc Delaney '13
been awarded a research grant by the Beta Beta Beta Foundation.
A biology major with a minor in chemistry, Delaney will work with faculty mentor Assistant Professor of Biology Karin Heckman on a project studying cancer-fighting properties of lycopene, a substance found in tomatoes.
Research to date has shown that lycopene may protect against certain malignancies. Delaney and Heckman will conduct research to determine if lycopene could protect against cancer by interfering with
the proliferation of cells in a type of melanoma.
Beta Beta Beta is the national biology honor society. Annually the organization awards cash grants to deserving students in order to encourage original research by undergraduates at institutions that have chapters.
Delaney is also active in St. Lawrence's chapter of Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honor society.
