Students and faculty in the mathematics, computer science and statistics department attended two conferences held the weekend of April 16 and 17. Seventeen students and eight faculty/staff members participated in the Hudson River Undergraduate Mathematics Conference (HRUMC) in New Hampshire, where 11 students and two faculty members presented research, and 11 students and three faculty members traveled to the University of Hartford to attend the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges (CCSCNE).

Presenting research at the HRUMC were:
Tara Akstull '10, "Poisson Models to Predict Scoring Rates in Hockey"
Jeremy Hadler '10, "Evaluating the Robustness of Competing Clustering Algorithms"
Meg Howard '10, "Classification Trees and Effective Recruiting in College Sports"
Thang Huynh '10, "Fourier Analysis on Boolean Functions and its Applications"
Catherine Lane '10, "Does Iron-Fortified Fish Sauce Reduce the Presence of Anemia? Data Anlysis and Simulations"
Assistant Professor Daniel Look, "A Visual Introduction to Complex Dynamics"
Oke McAndrews '10, "Forecasting the Natural Gas Market: Applications of Time Series Analysis"
Paul Mercurio '10, "Modeling the Spread of Raccoon Rabies in Connecticut using Spatial Data"
Katie Miller '10, "Predicting Wins for Baseball Games"
Jennifer Porter '10, "Detecting Hotspots with Spatial Analysis"
Karma Sonam '10, "Investigating the Convergence Rate of Sampling Distributions from Skewed Populations"
Marcus Tuttle '10, "Exploring Markov Chain Monte Carlo Techniques"
Assistant Professor Sam Vandervelde, "Euler, Partitions and Triangular Numbers"

At the CCSCNE, Geoff Baum '10, Tansy Peplau '11, and Nancy Decker '11 participated in a programming contest and placed 12th out of 28 schools. Additionally, Peplau presented a well- received poster based on her research work on facial recognition.
