Vice President for University Advancement Michael Archibald has been elected president of the Canton Golden Bear Education Foundation, founded in 2008 as a charitable organization whose purpose is "to accept and administer gifts for charitable purposes, providing enrichment and enhancement of educational programs and opportunities for students by securing and distributing financial and other resources for the Canton Central School District and its students."
Organization of the Foundation allows alumni, parents and friends the opportunity to make a tax deductible charitable donation to the school, beyond that provided through taxes.
Supporters may make unrestricted gifts, or designate a gift for academics; arts and music; or athletics and extracurricular activities. All funds, after modest expenses, are directed by the Foundation to be allocated at the discretion of the district's administration, in consultation with the Board of Education. Since receiving status as a charitable organization in December of 2008, over $40,000 has been given or pledged to the school through the Foundation.
Archibald has been at St. Lawrence since 1991, as director of annual giving (1991-94), director of annual and special gifts (1994-97), director of major gifts (1997-2001), interim vice president for advancement (2001-2002) and vice president for University advancement (2002-present). He oversees the advancement function including development, alumni and parent programs, University communications and North Country Public Radio.
