Rafferty Sweeney '09, of Longmont, CO, won the Austin A. Sartin Award for Outstanding Student Research presented at the Sigma Gamma Epsilon undergraduate research session at the Annual 2008 Geological Society of America Meeting in Houston, Texas. This is the second year in a row that a St. Lawrence student won the award; in 2007, Lauren Chrapowitsky '08 won.

Sweeney presented the results of his research conducted in the summer in Croatia, along with Charles Harman '09, of Southport, CT, and Assistant Professor of Geology Antun Husinec, on the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous Paleoclimate, funded by the National Science Foundation. Sweeney's work in Croatia was funded by the St. Lawrence Center for International and Intercultural Studies.

The presentation was titled "Cyclicity of Barremian tidal flat deposits of southern Adriatic platform, Croatia." Sweeney is a geology major, and a graduate of Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs.
