Dana Professor of Canadian Studies Robert Thacker will be awarded the International Council for Canadian Studies Certificate of Merit for his contributions to the development of Canadian studies at the organization's annual meeting in Ottawa, May 26, 2011.
The International Council for Canadian Studies bestows annually an international award of merit as a means to recognize the contribution of individuals to the development of Canadian Studies in Canada and abroad. In most instances, the awards recognize institutional and organizational work. The ICCS Certificates of Merit were established in 1988.
On May 3, an updated and revised trade paperback of Thacker's 2005 book, Alice Munro: Writing Her Lives will be published by Emblem, the paperback division of McClelland & Stewart, Toronto.
Thacker has been a member of the St. Lawrence faculty since 1983. A graduate of Bowling Green State University, he earned a master's degree from the University of Waterloo and the Ph.D. from the University of Manitoba. He is a former editor of The American Review of Canadian Studies; received the 2003 Edith and Delbert Wylder Award from the Western Literature Association; and was given an Arts in Academics award by the University of Waterloo Faculty of Arts. Winner of the Owen D. Young Outstanding Faculty Member award as voted by the senior class in 2002, as well as the J. Calvin Keene Award in 2006, Thacker has been associate dean for academic advising since 2005.
