Sandy Gates '09, of Bethel, Vermont, recently participated in a seminar in Thailand, run by the Prevent Human Trafficking Institute. She is studying in Thailand through the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) and received funding for participating in the study program from the global studies department's Fred Kahrs Award.

According to the institute's Web site, the seminar "offers unique access to some of Southeast Asia's pre-eminent scholars, activists, organizers and government officials working at the forefront of the global anti-trafficking movement." Gates, a global studies major, plans to continue study of this topic as her senior thesis.

Gates, a member of the women's squash team, studied in Kenya in the spring semester of 2007.
