Some 65 Advanced Spanish students from area high schools, and their teachers, were the guests of the St. Lawrence modern languages and literatures department for a Spanish Immerision Day on October 29.
Classes from Brasher Falls, Brushton-Moira, Canton, Lisbon, Malone, Ogdensburg and Saranac Lake schools participated in the program, organized by Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures Steven White.
Events included a presentation by Trisha Wickwire, a teacher from Saranac Lake Central School, who is the first recipient of a fellowship established by Emerita Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures Rita Goldberg. Wickwire used this support to spend six weeks during the summer in Peru, studying the Quechua language and indigenous cultures near Cusco. There were also discussion groups led by St. Lawrence students in the "Latin America in Film" course; and a panel discussion entitled "Pop Music Videos and Social Problems in the Hispanic World," led by Yesly Contreras '11, Braidy Estevez '11 and Nicole Szucs '10.
