Susan Willson

Assistant Professor of Biology Susan Willson has been awarded one of two T. Urling and Mabel Walker Research Fellowships for 2011. Willson and Angelena M. Ross, an adjunct professor of biology at SUNY Potsdam, were awarded fellowships for approximately $5,000 for research projects concerning North Country bird populations.

Willson's project, "Bird-Friendly Hayfields as Refugia for North Country Grassland Birds," was also the topic of a recent Faculty Café, an informal discussion held on campus. Her research explores whether haying practices on small family-run and Amish farms may be assisting in keeping grassland birds from becoming extinct, and compares local practices with those on large agribusiness farms.

The purpose of the Walker Fellowship program is to encourage faculty from the region's 11 institutions of higher education to undertake research on critical issues confronting North Country communities, and to make recommendations for possible solutions. "We are fortunate to be able to support fascinating research that directly benefits the environment and economy of the North Country through the Walkers' generous endowment," said SUNY Potsdam Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Margaret Madden.

Partner institutions for the Walker Fellowship include Adirondack Community College, Clarkson University, Clinton Community College, Jefferson Community College, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, North Country Community College, Paul Smith's College, St. Lawrence University, SUNY Canton, SUNY Plattsburgh, and SUNY Potsdam. Full- or part-time teaching and non-teaching faculty from the 11 institutions are eligible to apply.

Funding for the program comes from the Campaign for the T. Urling and Mabel Walker Research Fellowship Program, which is administered by the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at SUNY Potsdam.
More information on the Walker Fellowships program is on the SUNY Potsdam Web site.
