Students Perform in Spring Dance Concert

It’s that time of year again when St. Lawrence University’s Gulick Theatre is lit up with lights and bustling with dancers. The culmination of the semester’s work for both ballet and advanced modern dance will be presented at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 25, and Saturday, April 26.
Kerri Canedy, adjunct faculty of dance who has been teaching at St. Lawrence for four years, will say goodbye to the seniors who she has taught since their first year. While she loves working with students who love dance and want to learn more, she said the fun part is "getting people on stage who have never in their wildest dreams thought they would be on a stage."
This semester Canedy has collaborated with Visiting Professor of Creative Writing Kirsten Kaschock, in her class called “Parallel Play.”
“It’s exactly what I wanted to do with the advanced modern class – to give them their own voice, while finding inspiration within,” Canedy said. “Kirsten and I bonded immediately, and I’m so happy to have a kindred spirit.”
In addition, Canedy worked with a friend last summer and this past semester, making a three-minute dance video. Canedy explains that the film is a memento to historical dance and to the “old time people who made it possible for us to do this.”
“It’s been exciting to test the boundaries and brake down walls, while asking myself what is dance and what is creativity,” she said.
Both Kaschock’s class and the dance film will be included in the showcase among the dance classes and individual choreography.
