After taking AP Physics in high school I thought that actually physics could be fun and maybe I should consider majoring in it. After taking University Physics, I found that I enjoyed learning about the way physics explains the world and knew I wanted to make it my major. The small class sizes, collaboration and dogs in the department has definitely enhanced my college experience. It has worked out nicely that my interest in mathematics could become a major as well since there is a lot of overlap between the two areas. For my senior year I look forward to developing an SYE that represents a culmination of my physics studies at SLU.

In addition to an enjoyment of numbers and physics, I have always enjoyed learning about new cultures. This semester, spring of my junior year, I am studying abroad in hopes of becoming acquainted with Spanish culture and becoming fluent in the language. It has been a great opportunity to add a new dimension to my college education. I have learned a lot, from how to use the metro to art history while looking at the actual painting in a museum.

During the summer of 2011, I participated in the Liquid Crystal Materials Research REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) at the University of Colorado. I spent the time characterizing liquid crystals produced by the Chemistry Department at CU by looking at thin films of the material under a reflective microscope. It was a great opportunity to learn about laboratory work and enjoy the beautiful Rocky Mountains. After graduation I hope to pursue graduate studies in Applied Physics or a related field of Engineering.
