I am a senior from Wanakena, NY in the Adirondacks. I declared both my Sociology and Theatre majors in my first year at St. Lawrence because I quickly realized I had an unfailing passion for both. I first became interested in Sociology when I took an intro class at SUNY Potsdam my senior year of high school. This interest was reignited with my first Sociology class at SLU, "Inequality" with Dr. O'Neil, and my involvement in social action groups on campus such as the Advocates Program for survivors of sexual assault. My favorite courses have centered around issues of sex and gender power dynamics, medical sociology, environmental sociology, and macro-level theories about global inequalities and economic power distributions. I am currently completing an honors SYE with Dr. LeClerc about the role of women in Amish communities as demonstrated through Amish quilting. Recently, I was notified that I will be inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, and I am an active member of Omicron Delta Kappa, the campus chapter of the national honorary promoting leadership at SLU. I am also currently completing an honors SYE in the Theatre emphasis of the Performance and Communication Arts major. My project involves an analysis of the connection between realistic theatre makeup and corresponding cultural expectations of women between the mid-1800s and the mid-1960s. Because of my involvement with the University Costume Shop I was able to work at a professional opera company in Utah, the Utah Festival Opera Company, as a Wig and Makeup Artist during summers 2007 and 2008. My other extra-curricular activities with the University Theatre have also been beneficial, and this summer I will be working with a local theatre company, Community Performance Series, as the Charge Scenic Painter and Intern Coordinator. I plan to continue to be involved with theatre in the future, but my career will most likely involve work in issues surrounding social justice. Currently, I plan to pursue a Masters degree in Education for School Counseling, which I would be able to use at either the public school or university level.
