Peer-Tutoring at St. Lawrence University
Free tutoring is available for most introductory courses and for many of the more popular advanced courses. To get a tutor, use the request form, linked to at the bottom of this page. When the office locates a tutor (usually within a few days), you will get an e-mail with the tutor's name and e-mail address. It is up to you to contact the tutor and arrange a time and place to meet.
Caution: Tutors are very busy people, often with dozens of appointments and meetings to keep track of. They are usually good about returning e-mails, but sometimes life gets complicated. YOU are responsible for making your tutoring session happen. Make sure your message CLEARLY states your purpose for contacting the tutor. If you don't hear back right away, try again. If you still don't hear back, call Janet Torres, Peer Tutor Coordinator, at x5964.
Tutoring is available to any students who feel they could be learning more successfully than they are. It is not just for students who are struggling; in fact, tutors themselves get a lot of tutoring. They know firsthand how beneficial tutoring can be.
All tutors have a demonstrated mastery of course content (a minimum of a 3.0 in the courses they tutor and recommendations from two professors) and personal attitudes and abilities suitable for tutoring. They also receive training in the principles and best practices of tutoring. If you are interested in applying to be a tutor, call x5964 for details.
The primary focuses of tutoring are to:
Assess the learning task and the student's skills;
Provide direct instruction where necessary;
Provide sustained corrective feedback;
Model skills and strategies;
Provide opportunities for students to do the work.
The ultimate aim of tutoring is to help students become independent learners.
Tutoring has been found to help students improve grades, get work done in less time, understand material better, recall course-content over longer periods, and most importantly, help students become better learners in general.
