When you first imagine Upstate New York, you may picture rural farmlands and your typical Small Town, USA, with not a whole lot to do. In part, this is true; however, I have never had a problem finding something to do in Canton, the small town that houses St. Lawrence University.

As we approach the winter months and the temperatures drop and the snow begins to fall, you may think that your options for daily activates will decrease dramatically. I’m here to tell you that this is, by far, not the case. Between the activities that are put on throughout campus and the various locations in Canton and nearby towns, you will never have a dull moment.

Things To Do

1.      American Theatre

The movie theater is located in the center of town and features newly released films. Some showings even provide students with a discount!

2.      Great Eateries

There are some great places to eat in the area surrounding St. Lawrence. Whether you are looking to have a sit-down meal with your family or you are craving a burrito at 2 a.m., restaurants in Canton can fulfill your every need. You should absolutely check out Jake's on the Water, The Hideaway, The Ole Smokehouse, Buster's Sports Cafe, Hot Tamale, The Meadows, The Club, The Bagelry, Thai Cuisine, Maxfield's, Between the Buns, Cactus, and Sergi’s Pizzeria.

3.      Shopping at Luna (Canton) and Isle of You (Potsdam)

Luna and Isle of You are two boutique clothing stores where you can find unique clothing, shoes and accessories.

4.      Outing Club and Outdoor Program Trips

There is a lot to do outside in the North Country and St. Lawrence’s Outing Club and Outdoor Program make these trips possible. The two groups host hiking trips, ski trips, ice climbing trips and more. They also provide gear for students who need it!

5.      Cross Country Ski

If you are interested in cross-country skiing, there are trails all throughout the woods on and nearby campus and on the University golf course.

6.      Sporting Events

Winter sports are popular at St. Lawrence and students often attend games wearing scarlet and brown! Of all the games that there are to attend, men’s and women’s varsity hockey games are two of the most fun.

7.      Ice Skating

If you happen to have a hockey or figure skating background, or are just interested in the sport, there is an outdoor skating rink on campus that you can use! If the weather isn’t nice but you still want to skate, you can take advantage of Appleton Arena’s open skating hours, too.

8.      TAUNY Gallery & North Country Folkstore

TAUNY (Traditional Arts in Upstate New York) is a local shop that features handmade products from individuals and families throughout the region. The Folkstore often hosts exhibits, which showcase the work of many individuals. TAUNY is a great place to go if you are looking to purchase local souvenirs and gifts!

9.      Festivals

If want to get off campus during the winter season, the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival and Winterlude in Ottawa are two great events to attend. You can visit the Ice Palace in Saranac Lake, skate the Rideau Canal on Canada's capital city, and participate in the many events that the two festivals offer.
