I entered St. Lawrence knowing that I wanted to focus my studies on Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia. I had been teaching myself the language for about a year and wanted to go to Indonesia on a study abroad trip. In the fall of my sophomore year, I enrolled at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, where I spent a semester immersing myself in the Indonesian and Javanese languages, learning to perform traditional dances, making batik scarves, and playing games with my two-and-a-half year old host sister, Siti. After my return, I have been avidly researching the archaeology of Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, in the hopes of understanding ancient exchange networks in the region. I recently traveled back to Indonesia and Malaysia on a grant from the Freeman Foundation and am now completing an Honors thesis discussing Bronze Age relations between South and Southeast Asia.
