Durham, DeFlavio Impress in GS at SLU Carnival
Jan. 18: The St. Lawrence University alpine ski teams competed in the giant slalom on Friday at the 2013 SLU Carnival at Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid, NY. Senior Ashley-Kate Durham picked up her seventh career top-5 finish, while junior Ben DeFlavio earned her collegiate best showing.
"I'm very happy that Ashley-Kate had such a solid result," said St. Lawrence head coach Willi Steinrotter. "Ben has also been training great and it was awesome to see him have a top-10 result."
Durham posted top-5 finishes in both GS runs on Friday to land in fifth place overall with a time of 2:04.82. Senior Ann West, who missed last weekend's races at UVM, was 26th and sophomore Maria Hillenbrand capped the team's scoring in 38th position. The trio helped St. Lawrence to sixth place in the team standings.
First-year student Kalen Griffin was 41st overall, while sophomores Hannah Kadah (DNF) and Allison Visconti (DNF) rounded out the women's squad.
Meanwhile, DeFlavio was 10th in the men's GS and improved his career-best finish by eight places on Friday with a total time of 2:01.49. His previous best finish was 18th (slalom), while his best GS finish was at the 2011 SLU Carnival where he was 21st.
Joining DeFlavio in the scoring for St. Lawrence were graduate student Jeremy Lawless and junior Nick Scalia, who were 29th and 41st, respectively. The three led the Saints to seventh place as a team.
The Saints were done in by three non-qualifiers on Friday, as stand-outs Graham Scott (DNF) and Dustin Martin (DQ) failed to score points as did top rookie Nick Stenicka (DNF).
The University of Vermont swept the team events, with the women earning the top three individual spots. Kate Ryley won the GS for the Catamounts in 2:03.41, while Middlebury's David Donaldson won the men's event.
The Saints will continue to host the home carnival tomorrow, Saturday, January 19th when the teams compete in the slalom.
