Cortland Turns Back Saints 3-0
Oct. 24: Junior goaltender Nicole Matos came through with a heroic effort, but Cortland State dominated St. Lawrence in a NCAA Division III field hockey game in Cortland, handing the Saints their seventh straight loss, 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Saints, who fall to 2-13 on the season, will conclude the year with a game at Morrisville State on Saturday. Cortland improves to 8-6 on the season.
Matos made 17 saves for the Saints as Cortland had a 20-0 edge in shots on goal and a 32-3 overall edge in shot attempts. Cortland also had a 15-2 advantage in penalty corners with Amanda Perricone and Emily von Schondorf combining for the shutout.
Cortland opened the scoring 10:50 into play as Katie Barbagallo tapped in a loose ball in a scramble in front of the Saint goal. IT went to 2-0 when Erin Carrino scored her sixth of the year, one-timing a cross from Karly Vdoviak past Matos at 17:21. Cortland took the game's first 17 shots and had a 19-1 shot advantage in the first half with Matos making 10 saves.Emily Viani helped keep it a two-goal game,making two first half defensive saves for the Saints.
The Red Dragons completed the scoring 14:29 into the second half when Sara Woodward scored her seventh of the year on a long blast from the top of the circle with Erin Smith picking up an assist on the play.
