Men's Basketball Program
The St. Lawrence University men's basketball program, traditionally a small-college power in the East region, has a history of success both on the court and in the classroom. Over the past 15 seasons, the Saints have attended numerous NCAA tournaments, including the Elite Eight in 1998 and the Sweet 16 in 2009, while making 11 conference post-season appearances.
Under the direction of head coach Chris Downs, the all-time winningest coach in Saints men's basketball history, the Saints have compiled a record of 243-155, averaging nearly 17 victories per season. Developing his players into some of the strongest on both a regional and national level, he has coached fourteen 1,000-point scorers, eight All-East Region selections, three National All-Americans, four conference Rookie of the Years, three conference Player of the Years and 33 All-Conference players.
Of the three National All-Americans, the most recent was Ralph Temgoua '12, who was named to the third team in 2012. Ranking among the most talented players in the program's history, Temgoua was voted into the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division III Senior All-Star Game in Salem, VA, and will follow the route of several former Saints player and continue his basketball career playing professionally in Europe.
The Scarlet and Brown traditionally play a very tough schedule in addition to the Liberty League slate, where it has a record of 72-28 since the 2005-06 season. The Burkman Gymnasium is home to the men's and women's basketball teams in the winter, as well as the volleyball team in the fall. The facility, which features recently renovated parquet floor, has hosted numerous conference tournaments, as well first rounds of the men's and women's NCAA basketball tournaments.
St. Lawrence University recognizes the role that athletics plays in the personal growth and development of its students.
