Bear Edge Saints in Overtime, 68-66

Janpeter Brase '14 had a career night for the Saints, recording 14 points and 16 rebounds.

Dec 4:  Senior captain Curtis Pierce made a layup with two seconds left in overtime to give the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team a 68-66 non-conference victory over St. Lawrence University in Potsdam, NY on Tuesday night. 

The Bears improved to 2-4 on the season and were led by senior guard Mark Lake, Jr. whjo led all scorers with 19 points, while Pierce finished with 12 points and six boards.

The Saints move to 2-4 on the season and was led three in double figures.  Junior Janpeter Brase had a career night for the Saints with a double-double, recording 14 points, a game-high 16 rebounds and three blocks.  Senior captain Kyle Miller finished with 12 points and six rebounds and junior Payton Stahler contributed another 11 points.  Junior Al Jones chipped in nine points and seven boards.

In the overtime period, Lake got the Bears started quickly with a layup just three seconds into the extra period. With the score tied at 58, Lake then hit four straight free throws for a 62-58 lead. As Potsdam looked to pull away, Jones knocked down a three to cut the gap to 62-61.  Again Lake answered with a three-point play to put the Bears back up 65-61 with under a minute remaining. 

Miller sank a three-pointer to make it 65-64, and after a Potsdam turnover, Brase hit a layup to put the Saints up by one with five seconds to play.  After a timeout, the Bears inbounded the ball to Pierce who hit the layup and was fouled with two seconds left.  He then sealed the 68-66 win with a free throw. 

Potsdam shot 39 percent from the floor, while St. Lawrence hit 37 percent of its shots.  The Saints out-rebounded Potsdam 51-42 on the night.

The Saints will be back in action on Tuesday, December 11 when they host the Bombers of Ithaca.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00pm.
