Bonney Paces Statesmen Past Saints, 77-60
Feb. 16: The St. Lawrence University men's basketball team lost its final game of the 2012-13 season on Saturday, as Richie Bonney's double-double of 34 points and 15 rebounds led Hobart College to a 77-60 victory in Geneva, NY. Brady Condlin, Janpeter Brase and Payton Stahler all scored in double-digits for the Saints.
Hobart, which had previously wrapped up the 2013 Liberty League regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming tournament, improves to 19-6 (15-1). The Saints' season comes to an end with a 9-16 mark overall and 7-9 in conference play.
Condlin was the leading scorer for the Scarlet and Brown, scoring 16 points while Brase and Stahler added 12 and 10, respectively. Rookie Trent Benton was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field for eight points. However, Bonney's big night was combined with 19 points from Stefan Thompson and 13 from Joe Gibbons en route to the win.
St. Lawrence opened the game in style, as Leondre Simmon, Condlin and Brase all scored for a quick 7-0 lead. Hobart would take little time in answering, though the Saints would hang tough throughout the first half, tied 29-29 with 3:25 remaining. Unfortunately, Hobart would run out the half on an 8-0 run to grab its largest lead at 37-29.
The momentum would remain on the side of the Statesmen, as the continued to impress early in the second half, growing the lead to 13 on a lay-up by Bonney. However, the Saints would rally behind a 14-5 run to creep back to within four at 49-45 with 11 minutes to go. Marty Lewis, Condlin and Kyle Miller knocked down threes and Stahler added a two-point jumper to keep the Saints within striking distance.
However, Bonney would begin to take over both on the glass and in scoring for Hobart, as he was able to push the lead back to 11 with 5:22 to go. Thompson would put the game away with a dagger three with 2:31 left to put Hobart up by 16 on the way to the 77-60 victory.
Miller, playing in his final game at St. Lawrence, added three points, two steals and two blocks. The Saints shot 41% from the field including 27% from behind the arc, but were outdone by Hobart's 52% from the field and 38% from three point land.
Hobart will host Skidmore on Wednesday in the Liberty League Semifinals, while Union hosts Rensselaer in the other game.
