Saints Blank Alabama Huntsville on Joe Marsh Night
A near-capacity crowd on hand to honor retired Saint coach Joe Marsh was treated to another spectacular display by Flanagan, who put together a multi-point game for the fifth straight night, leading the Saints, ranked 15th in one poll and 16th in another to the win. Flanagan led the nation in scoring going into Friday's game with five goals and six assists and was both the ECAC and national Player of the Month for October.
Charger senior goaltender John Griggs kept his club in the game with a 37-save effort, but UAH couldn't put a lot of pressure on Weninger and the Saint defense until the third period. Four of Weninger's 10 saves in the first two periods came on dump-ins from well outside the blue line. The Saint junior, ECAC Goalie of the Month for October, made 11 of his 21 saves in the third period to protect his sixth career shutout. He has given up just one goal on 88 shots in his last three starts.
The Saints opened the scoring when sophomore Gunnar Hughes finished off a pretty passing play with his second of the year at 14:07 of the first period. Flanagan started the play when he hit George Hughes in stride as Hughes pinched in from the point and Hughes relayed the puck to his younger brother who put it past Griggs from point blank range.
Marsh was honored with an on-ice ceremony between the first and second periods and the Saints came out flying, putting the game away with three goals in the middle stanza.
Junior Greg Carey scored his fourth of the season as sophomore Chris Martin set him up with a great pass to the left faceoff circle where Carey one-timed a shot past Griggs. George Hughes picked up his sixth assist of the season on the play at 5:20. Flanagan then scored a highlight reel goal as he picked the pocket of a Charger defenseman and skated across the top of the crease, snapping a backhand between his legs up and under the crossbar from in tight for his sixth of the season, unassisted, at 8:01.
Senior defenseman Jordan Dewey completed the scoring as he pinched from the point and Flanagan found him with a pass. Dewey shot from the short slot as he was being knocked to the ice and scored his first of the year with Gunnar Hughes also picking up an assist at 10:35.
While UAH turned up the pressure in the third, Weninger kept them off the board and the Saint penalty killers foiled a late Charger man advantage to protect the shutout. SLU did not allow a shot on two Charger power plays.
