Strong First Half Lifts Saints to 79-63 Victory over Soaring Eagles
Dec. 1: The St. Lawrence University women's basketball used a strong first half to earn a 79-63 victory over non-conference opponent Elmira, Saturday in the Burkman Gymnasium. The Saints' 57% shooting in the opening stanza gave St. Lawrence a double figure lead that the Soaring Eagles were unable to overcome.
St. Lawrence, led by three in double figures, improves to 2-3 on the season. Junior Kelly Legg had a team-high 16 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Kara McDuffee added 11 points and three assists. Sophomore Ali Cady tallied 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and each member of the Saints' squad contributed points offensively.
Meanwhile, Elmira falls to 2-4 despite a double-double performance by junior Jessica Zoltowski with 24 points, 13 rebounds and five steals. Junior Maria Thannhauser added 19 points and eight rebounds, while classmate Liz Forrest had 12 points and seven rebounds.
The Soaring Eagles jumped out to an early 7-2 lead before entering a 9:00 minute scoreless drought thanks to solid Saints' defense. Meanwhile, the Saints were 16-of-28 from the floor and took a 44-23 lead into halftime. St. Lawrence led by as many as 27 points in the second half, though was outscored 11-1 by the visitors in the final 4:39.
St. Lawrence will be back in action on Friday as it hosts Hartwick College in a non-conference match-up. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 PM in the Burkman Gymnasium.
