Saint Team, Courneene Gain USTFCCCA All Academic Honors

Feb. 22: St. Lawrence University's cross country teams each earned United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All Academic status and four individuals earned individual All Academic honors, based on grade point average and finish in the NCAA Regional Championships.

Rakoc, Patterson, Newman Sweep Liberty League Awards

Nov. 27: St. Lawrence University's men's cross country team swept the major awards in the Liberty League for the second straight year in voting by the league's coaches.

Rakoc 80th, Saints 27th as a Team at NCAA Championships

Nov. 17: Senior Sam Rakoc had his best finish in three NCAA Division III Championship races with a 80th place finish and the St. Lawrence University men's cross country team finished 27th in a field of 32 teams at the 2012 championship in Terre Haute, IN on Saturday.

Nov. 10: St. Lawrence University cross country senior Sam Rakoc knows he has another race to run after Saturday's NCAA Atlantic Regional Qualifier at Genesee Valley Park in Rochester, but the question of whether or not he was to have company had to wait until the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship committee filled the rest of the field on Sunday.

Rakoc, Saints Dominate Liberty League Championships

Oct. 27: While St. Lawrence University's men's cross country team did not quite match last year's perfect score at the Liberty League Cross Country Championships, the Saints came through with a dominating performance on Clarkson's new 8,000 meter course and won their 28th league title and 18th straight in impressive fashion on Saturday.

Rakoc Wins NYSCTC Title, Saint Team Finishes 2nd

Oct. 20: One St. Lawrence University men's cross country streak was snapped, but another stayed alive on Saturday at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference Cross Country Championships at Center Park in Fairport.

Sam Vandervelde

Dr. Sam Vandervelde will serve as the men's cross country team's Faculty/Staff Mentor for the 2012-13 season.  

Vandervelde joined the faculty at St. Lawrence University in the fall of 2007. Since then he has launched a student problem solving seminar, written a textbook for the department proofs course, initiated a friendly mathematical rivalry with other New York colleges, and taken the lead in organizing the Festival of Science, an annual event showcasing student research. He strives to provide a lively, engaging mathematical experience for his students, both in and out of the classroom.

Prior to arriving at St. Lawrence he participated in a number of math circles in the San Francisco Bay Area, forming and directing the Stanford Math Circle for two years. Dr. Vandervelde has also taught at Wellesley College for three semesters and at the Roxbury Latin School, a private boys school in the Boston area, for five years. He writes and oversees the Mandelbrot Competition, a national high school math contest.

Dr. Vandervelde's mathematical interests encompass number theory, graph theory, combinatorics, and Euclidean geometry. Current research includes work on arithmetic graph sums and new partition identities. Other projects include revising and polishing a textbook entitled Bridge to Higher Mathematics.

Rakoc 4th, Saints 2nd in 21st Hoffmann Invitational

Oct. 6: Runners from Cortland State swept the top three spots and the Red Dragons edged St. Lawrence in a battle of top-30 men's cross country teams at the 21st annual Ronald C. Hoffmann Invitational on the St. Lawrence campus on Saturday.
