Apr. 22: The Liberty League announced its weekly award winners on Monday, and five St. Lawrence University student-athletes and the men's varsity 8+ were honored for their athletic accomplishments.

Sophomore golfer Jack Whelan took individual honors at the Fred Kravitz Invitational at Rochester, shooting rounds of 76 and 73 for a 149 total. Tied for fourth after round one, his 73 at Oak Hill tied for low round of the day and was the tie-breaker for the individual championship. The Topsfield, MA native earned the conference's Performer of the Week for his play.

Senior Jack Nuland and first-year student Malcolm Lynch were both recognized for men's lacrosse after the No. 17 Saints swept SUNY Potsdam and Rensselaer. Nuland posted a .708 save percentage and a 3.62 goals against average to earn Defensive Player of the Week honors, while Lynch scored two goals as a long-stick midfielder including the game-winner in the win over the Engineers. Lynch, a native of Watertown, NY, added three caused turnovers and four ground balls during the weekend and was named the Rookie of the Week.

Apr. 9: The Liberty League announced its weekly award winners on Monday, and five St. Lawrence University student-athletes were honored for their athletic accomplishments.

Four student-athletes, including Jack Whelan, Michael Hayden, Hannah Kinsey and Marissa Turner, were named Performer of the Week for their respective sports.

Whelan tied for 17th in the prestigious Terra Cotta Invitational in Naples, Fla. with a three-round total of 4-over par, earning Liberty League Performer of the Week honors for men's golf. The tournament included a field of 78 collegiate and amateur players from around the world.

Hayden was a perfect 6-0 last week on the tennis court, beating opponents from Nazareth, Bard and Union at first singles and doubles to help the Saints complete a 3-0 weekend sweep.

The duo of Kinsey and Turner propelled the women's track and field team to victory at the Rochester Alumni Invitational. Kinsey earned the league's Track Performer of the Week having won the 100-meter dash and having coming in third in the 200m dash. Meanwhile, Turner is the Field Performer of the Week after a victory in the high jump (1.64) earned the Saints 10 key points in the event.

St. Lawrence also had three Rookies of the Week selections from the Liberty League, including Jeremy Vautour, Rhonny Rosario and Nick Crawford.

Mar. 15: St. Lawrence University is ranked in the top-25 of the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings after the first round of winter totals. The Saints are 23rd out of the 219 teams that have earned points during NCAA competition, and are the top ranked Liberty League institution.

St. Lawrence has 223.50 points overall after adding 54.5 points for the performances in women's track and field. The trio of Divya Biswal, Ella Martin and Marisa Turner lifted the Saints ahead of Cortland State and Carnegie Mellon into 23rd overall.

Four Liberty League institutions are in the top-100, including St. Lawrence, Hobart/William Smith (35th), Skidmore (91st) and Clarkson (99th). Williams College owns the top spot with 375.25 points, followed by Middlebury, Johns Hopkins, Calvin and Emory.

The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports - nine women's and nine men's. The second Division III winter standings will be released on Thursday, March 28.

Mar. 6: Wally Johnson, the St. Lawrence University Director of Athletic Media Relations, has been chosen for induction into the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Hall of Fame Class of 2013 this summer in Orlando, FL on June 13 during the 56th annual national convention.

"All of us in the athletic department are thrilled for Wally, as we all know how hard he has worked over his 38-year tenure at St. Lawrence," said University Director of Athletics Margie Strait. "As time has passed, Wally was able to adapt to the challenges of sports information and new modalities for sharing information about deserving student-athletes at St. Lawrence University."

Johnson has put together a storied career in the sports information business, becoming the first college division to win all three of the profession's major awards, including CoSIDA's Warren Berg Award (2001), ECAC's Irving T. Marsh Award (1995) and the Pete Nevins Award (2012). Temple's Al Shrier is also the winner of the Marsh and Nevins Awards and the CoSIDA's Arch Ward award. Johnson was also the 1971 Vermont Sportswriter of the Year.

His dedication to his work was also exhibited through service, as he served for 25 years on the ECAC-SIDA board and was a long-serving chairman of the CoSIDA Workshop Exhibits Committee. Wally is a founding member of St. Lawrence University's Athletic Hall of Fame and continues to provide coverage for 12 Saints teams.

Feb. 26: The Liberty League announced its weekly award winners on Monday, and five St. Lawrence University student-athletes were honored for their athletic accomplishments.

Junior Kelly Legg was named the Most Valuable Player of the Liberty League Women's Basketball Tournament after scoring a team-high 18 points in the Saints' 51-48 championship victory over William Smith. She also added 12 points in the team's 58-44 semifinal win over Skidmore on Wednesday, landing her Liberty League Performer of the Week honors.

Also earning Performer of the Week for women's track was sophomore Carly Stine. Stine won the 500-meter at the NYSCTC Championship, breaking an 11-year old St. Lawrence record with a time of 1:17.17. She also ran on the record-setting Distance Medley Relay, which won in 12:02.83 to establish a new school mark, and on the victorious 4 x 400 relay.

Three St. Lawrence first-year students earned Rookie of the Week honors from the conference in their respective sports, including Ella Martin for women's track and field, Nick Crawford for men's track and field and Amr Khaled Khalifa for men's squash.

Martin was named Rookie of the Meet at the NYSCTC Championships after winning the 3,000-meter race in a facility record 10:19.86, finishing second in the mile with a 5:09.59 clocking and anchoring the St. Lawrence record-setting Distance Medley Relay which won in 12:02.83, also a facility record.

Feb. 4: The Liberty League announced its weekly award winners on Monday, and seven St. Lawrence University student-athletes were honored for their athletic accomplishments.

Jan. 28: The St. Lawrence University women's hockey team will give fans a unique, inside look into women's college hockey on Saturday.

The team is hosting "Saints Go Social" during the home game against Clarkson on Saturday, February 2, at 3 p.m. in Appleton Arena. The event, which is co-sponsored by the Athletics Department, University Communications office and Libraries & IT Division, will feature behind-the-scenes videos and interviews, social media updates and photos from behind the St. Lawrence bench. Meanwhile, fans at Appleton Arena and those unable to attend can participate in a variety of social media contests, including one for a new iPad Mini that will be given away to a spectator in attendance.

Each member of the women's hockey team will wear a new jersey that will feature the athletics department's Twitter handle, @SLUsaints, on the front and the player's handle on the back.

The women's hockey team had the idea for the event during a team practice earlier this season when the team was discussing Twitter, said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells.

Dec. 18: Women's basketball player Kara McDuffee and men's alpine skier Graham Scott have been named the 2012 winners of St. Lawrence University's Ronald C. Hoffmann Outstanding First Year Scholar-Athlete Awards.

Nov. 21: St. Lawrence University's athletic program ranks 19th among 119 NCAA Division III schools which have qualified for the first fall listing of the Learfield Driectors Cup standings.

The Learfield, Directors Cup ranks NCAA athletic programs based on participation in NCAA tournament and championship competition. The first ranking includes the recently completed men's and women's cross country, field hockey and women's volleyball championships.

St. Lawrence will gain points in the second ranking which will include the men's soccer tournament.

A seventh place finish by the women's cross country team earned the Saints 72 points and a 27th place finish by the men's cross country team earned 47 points for a 119 total in the first ranking.

Middlebury leads the first ranking with 256.5 points and scored in all four of the counting NCAA competitions. The Saints are the top-ranked Liberty League team and the second New York State school, four points behind Rochester which is ranked 18th.
