Community Spotlight: The Campus Kitchens Project

By: Marie Northrup '15

Courtney Fogarty acts as the community partner of the Campus Kitchens Program here at St. Lawrence. Courtney’s passion and dedication toward the program is influential and truly an inspiration to fellow students- bursting the “St. Lawrence bubble” to become more involved within the surrounding community in the North Country. As a student she majors in English Writing and Sociology. Even as a double major student, Courtney still manages to prevail- even though she says it is not without difficulty.

In her hometown, Pepperell, MA, Courtney first found her interest in servicing the community through her family, especially from her mother, by volunteering at local food banks, soup kitchens, half-way houses, etc.    Courtney was introduced to Campus Kitchens through SLUWire when she was a freshman. Starting as a simple dishwasher, she began to develop within the program by taking initiative to contribute to the menu . Courtney enjoyed being creative with the food donated from Dana and Price Chopper. She looks forward to solving the mystery of how to combine the ingredients to make a complete dish.

Courtney’s attention and spirit at Campus Kitchens quickly moved her into a leadership position. She began to work closely with he CBL program and the students placed with CKP where she supported them in helping to make a difference in the local community. After college Courtney plans to keep up her interest in service work. This summer she will be interning at the US Department of Justice where she will be connecting with the community through governmental institutions. Eventually Courtney dreams of writing professionally.

Great job Courtney! The CCE thanks you for being so faithful to the Campus Kitchens mission- we spotlight you!
