ISEP-Mexico

Hola! My name is Emily Brown and I am a senior from Boston, Massachusetts. This year I will be finishing up my Global Studies major, focusing on Latin American Studies, and Sociology minor. I spent my junior spring in Puebla, Mexico through St. Lawrence's ISEP program. Besides having the opportunity to travel around the country, I also experienced my first earthquake and volcanic activity! Needless to say, it was an exciting semester filled with adventure, culture, and other eye opening experiences.

I chose to study abroad in Mexico for many different reasons like language, my major, and partly because I grew up there. I felt like going back as a student would be a great way to reconnect with the culture that I loved so much as a child. Being in Mexico as a student allowed me to see a side of the culture that I could understand on a completely different level.

One of my best experiences while I was in Mexico was teaching English to a group of kindergarteners three times a week. Taking this course taught me a lot about the education system in Mexico and how much culture plays a role in schools. Through this experience I was able to begin a photography project that will be exhibited as part of my SYE. The photos focus on the exploration of Mexican culture in education and various communities around Mexico.

Going abroad was one of the most rewarding experiences that I've had at St. Lawrence University and am excited to share all of my wonderful adventures with other students.
