The course will explore the relationship between colonialism and racism, France's "benevolent" immigration policies, the relationship between U.S. "Black Power" movement and Negritude-an expression of revolt against French colonialism and racism founded by three colonial subjects of France from Martinique, Guiana and Senegal.  Together we will read from the works of Aime Cesaire, Leon Gontran Dama and Leopold Sedar Senghor as well as others.  The course will also examine the evolution of race relations in contemporary France.

Finally, in addition to the more traditional classroom experiences, we will participate in activities designed to expose students to Caribbean food, culture and performance.
