Theater in London: Introduction
Patti McGill Peterson Center for International and Intercultural Studies
The Scope of the Course
We will see 10 plays during the semester. Whilst it is not possible to arrange our theatre visits so that the plays follow a chronological order, the course aims to give an overview of theatre history.
Aims of the Course
- To discuss and understand the issues and questions raised by each play
- To examine the way in which each fits into the history of British theatre and drama in general
- To be able to analyze and appreciate dramatic art in all its complexity. To be able to examine the different crafts which are involved in each production, and the way in which directing, acting, sets, lighting and costume and the other elements contribute to the overall success of each performance
- To develop critical skills and the ability to form opinions about what is being experienced, based on valid criteria
- To develop a genuine enthusiasm for theatre at its most thought-provoking.......something which will, it is hoped, become an enduring, lifelong passion
