My name is Bill Prescott, and I am a senior here at St. Lawrence. I am from Lenox MA, and I am an Environmental Studies-Government combined major, with a European Studies minor. When I was deciding where to attend college, I knew that I wanted the opportunity to study abroad. The many excellent study abroad programs available at St. Lawrence were a big reason I decided to attend St. Lawrence. In looking at the different study abroad programs available, I soon realized that Copenhagen, Denmark would be the perfect place for me to study abroad for the fall 2012 semester of my junior year. Academically, Denmark was an ideal location to study environmental policy from a European perspective. I also was excited to live in an urban environment, which was a big change from Canton NY, and the ability to travel to multiple countries.

When I first arrived in Copenhagen, I did not know what to expect. However, when I met my host family, I became much more relaxed. Living with a host family was an amazing experience, and I know I will always be in contact with them. I lived in the small town of Allerød, a 10 minute bike ride to the station and 30 minute train ride from Copenhagen,. My host family really did a great job of incorporating me into their family, and teaching me many Danish traditions, like the traditional Danish Christmas, and Danish Birthdays.

I took classes at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS), right in the heart of Copenhagen. I studied in the Sustainability in Europe program, which introduced me to a variety of new perspectives on environmental policy. My favorite part about the DIS programs, however, is the study tour component. I travelled to England with my program for a week, where we learned firsthand about urban and rural sustainable initiatives. DIS also has multiple ways to get involved outside of classes as well. I played on a local Danish soccer club, and was part of the DIS student activities council, both of which introduced me to different perspectives on Denmark.

Overall, my experience in Denmark was one I will never forget. The people I met, the places I visited, and the perspectives I gained are things I will never forget. My semester studying abroad has helped shape my St. Lawrence experience, and I encourage anyone who has the opportunity to study abroad to pursue it.
