Denny
Brown
Doctor of Humane Letters
When Denny Brown retires from the presidency of Clarkson University
at the end of this academic year, he will leave an institution
that has been transformed in his eight-year tenure. Working with
colleagues on campus, among its alumni, and with leaders of international
business and industry, President Brown has brought Clarkson to
a new level of pre-eminence among institutions with special emphasis
on science and technology.
President Brown came to Clarkson in 1995 from Drexel University,
where he was provost and senior vice president for academic affairs.
He began his career in academia as a teacher of inorganic and
physical chemistry; his research has been primarily in bioinorganic
chemistry. He was educated at Whitman College and the University
of Illinois, and has been a fellow of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation
and of the Alexander VonHumboldt Stiftung.
At Clarkson, under his leadership, Clarkson finalized a Vision
for a Clarkson Education as well as a new Master Plan in 1996,
and completed the consolidation of Clarkson’s academic
programs on the Hill campus. President Brown implemented a new
Honors Program and a master’s degree in physical therapy
and with his encouragement interdisciplinary, team-based projects
have become an integral part of the Clarkson learning experience.
During his tenure, both enrollment and major giving increased,
residence halls were renovated, and Bertrand H. Snell Hall, housing
the School of Business and the School of Liberal Arts as well
as three academic “centers,” was constructed.
St. Lawrence is proud to recognize the leader of one of our
neighboring fine institutions of higher education, and our favorite
hockey rival, with the honorary degree Doctor of Humane Letters.
