NYPA Grant to Support Nature Up North
The New York Power Authority St. Lawrence River Research and Education Fund has awarded a $20,000 grant to St. Lawrence for a new environmental program, Nature Up North, developed by Associate Professor of Biology Erika Barthelmess and Nature Up North Project Manager Erin Siracusa, class of 2012. Their project will focus on using the Internet and citizen-based science to understand and protect the St. Lawrence River watershed and also on offering St. Lawrence River-focused environmental and outreach activities to local school children, their families and other members of the North Country region.
The primary goal of the project is to increase community connections to, concern for, and stewardship of the St. Lawrence River watershed. Barthelmess and Siracusa will work with colleagues on campus as well as several community partners to pursue this goal. Community partners include the Robert Moses State Park Nature Center, the Ogdensburg Boys & Girls Club, Indian Creek Nature Center, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe Environment Division, and local schools.
