Branch is the author of a trilogy of books published by Simon & Schuster that chronicle the life of Martin Luther King Jr.: Parting the Waters: America in the King Years, 1954-63 (1988); Pillar of Fire: America in the King Years, 1963-65 (1998); and At Canaan's Edge: America in the King Years, 1965-1968 (2006). He was the recipient of a five-year MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 1991 and a National Humanities Medal in 1999.
