Where is Tibet? How do I introduce an "unknown culture," especially one that is vanishing in the wake of political upheaval, to my students?

These pages are designed to help you and your students place Tibet in a context: a geographic and historic context, and a cultural and religious context. An image illustrates each section of text.

Use this information as a jumping-off point to do further research, to look for more images, and to give students ideas for questions they might ask gallery staff, or the monks who are creating the sand mandala.

Many thanks for the Council for Creative Projects, distributors of the traveling photo exhibition, Seven Years in Tibet: Photographs of Heinrich Harrer, for allowing us to reproduce portions of their Educational Materials Packet on the following pages.
