Seed to Table

The Seed to Table Club began in the fall of 2010 when a group of students* came together to start a student-run garden on the St. Lawrence Campus. The club and garden space have been, and continue to be, entirely student-driven and run. The garden is a place where students can come together to learn skills that will transfer to their lives after graduation and will also enrich their time at St. Lawrence.

Our mission is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to grow their own food, thereby exposing the student body to the importance of responsible food production and providing an accessible source of nutritious produce through the permaculture garden.

Over the last 12 years, the club has undergone many different iterations. Early on, students cultivated a production plot at the Sustainability Farm, as well as in the permaculture garden. All of the produce was sold to Dana Dining Hall which helped to fund the club. We have since transitioned away from a production-focused lens and are striving to make the permaculture garden a learning space that is open to student experiments, and exploration. We also seek to make the garden space a place where students feel comfortable and want to hang out. The garden is a safe space, and all are welcome.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the club once again experienced another transitional period. We are now looking at the garden as a material space to engage with diversity, inclusion, and accessibility work. We seek to make the garden space a continually more welcoming space that students feel compelled to utilize in a variety of different ways.

For the last couple of years, there has not been a student intern maintaining the garden throughout the summer. This is a position we are working to build back into the club in order to better maintain the garden. Additionally, it allows students to become deeply engaged and have autonomy over the space. We hope to launch this internship position prior to the 2023 growing season!
