History Major / Minor Requirements
The history faculty offer a wide range of courses at the introductory, intermediate and advanced levels in American (North American, Native American, Caribbean and Latin American), European, and Non-Western (Asian, Middle Eastern and African) history, with additional opportunities for independent study in these areas as well as others not directly covered in the curriculum. The St. Lawrence Catalog lists these titles, among over 50 others, beyond the introductory level:

North America: History of Women in America, Origins of American Foreign Policy, Slavery in America, Introduction to Native American History, The Civil Rights Movement, Recent America, Colonial and Modern Latin America, and US and Cuba;
Europe and the Ancient World: The Medieval World, The Renaissance World, The Holocaust, History of Women in Modern Europe, 18th Century Europe and the French Revolution, and European Identities: 1700-2000;
Africa, Asia, Middle East:: West Africa and the Diaspora, History of Modern Japan, Revolutionary China, Jihad Movements in Islamic History, and Pan-Africanism: Past, Present, and Future Prospects
The department offers both a major and a minor. As a major you can construct a program that is flexible enough to enable you to pursue your own interests and goals while at the same time developing an appreciation of the diversity of human culture. Advanced seminars allow you to engage in substantial independent study on a topic in one of the categories; recent topics have ranged from Darwin, Marx and Freud to Women and Work to Contemporary Challenges in Asia and Africa. History courses are part of several of St. Lawrence's interdisciplinary curricula: Asian studies, African studies, Caribbean and Latin American studies and Canadian studies. History students find many of St. Lawrence's international programs to be suitable complements to their course work.
