Vilas Student Research Fund

Award amount: Up to $3,000

Eligibility: Any student working on historical study under the supervision of a member of the History department faculty

Preference will be given to

1. History majors/ minors working on an SYE project (Honors thesis, Independent-study SYE, SYE course)

2. History majors/ minors working on another project supervised by a History Department faculty member

3. Students in history courses doing significant historical research

Students who have received a Vilas research award are eligible to apply for future rounds of funding, but preference will generally be given to students who have not yet received an award.

Application deadlines: 1 May (for research related to fall-semester project); 1 November (for research related to spring-semester project); 15 February (for research related to spring-semester project)

All applications should include a completed form (request this from the department chair), a 1-2 page proposal, and an itemized anticipated budget, and should be submitted to the department chair.

Permitted expenses include research travel and acquisition of books or other research materials or equipment necessary for the project (these will be retained by the History Department on completion of the project).

All award recipients must, upon completion of their research, write a one-paragraph report, to be shared with donors where applicable and for department publicity purposes.

Robert B. and Susan G. Carlisle Research Award

Award amount: Up to $1000

Eligibility: Any student working on the study of France or French-speaking countries

Preference will be given to

1. Students who submit proposals involving the study of France

2. Students who have been accepted into or have previously participated in the study abroad program in France and wish to complete research projects related to that experience

3. Students with interest in Martinique and other French-speaking countries

Application deadlines: 1 May (for research related to fall-semester project); 1 November (for research related to spring-semester project); 15 February (for research related to spring-semester project)
