St. Lawrence men's crew team member Andrew Kraus '09, of Devon, PA, spends a lot of time on the water for his sport, but from July 3 through 6, he ran a 100-mile race through the Namib Desert in Namibia, Africa.

Kraus, who was on his high school wrestling and lacrosse teams, ran the equivalent of four marathons in four days with his father, a veteran of several past marathons. While Kraus says that the experience was "extremely difficult," he adds that it was, "a very rewarding experience as well.

"The one-of-a-kind landscape in that country was absolutly breathtaking," Kraus says. "To my surprise, I was able to complete the entire race. I finished the five stages (over four days) in a time total of 19 hours, 17 minutes and 59 seconds, which was good enough for 19th place, out of 25. The winner finished in 12 hours! I was further suprised to be told by the race organizers that, at age 19, I was the youngest person to ever complete the race. They presented me with a special award for the acheivment, which I hold with much pride. I was very grateful that I had this experience, as the race taught me a lot about what I am able to accomplish as a person. I have already made plans to travel back to Africa next year to compete in the same race, again running with my father."
