Associate Professor of Statistics Michael Schuckers and Lauren Brozowski '11 each gave presentations on their research at the Joint Statistical Meetings, held in Miami in July. Schuckers presented his research on the National Hockey League draft system and Brozowski presented work that the pair did, analyzing rates of penalties called in the NHL.

Brozowski was a member of the St. Lawrence women's ice hockey team and earned her degree in mathematics. Much of the research was conducted as her Senior-Year Experience.

Schuckers and Brozowski looked at the 2008-09 and 2009-10 NHL seasons and analyzed factors that affecting the rate at which penalties are called. They concluded that individual referees and linesman do not seem to consistently impact the rate at which penalties are called; penalty rates are significantly lower during a close game; penalty rates are significantly lower in the third period and they drop further in overtime; and penalty rates are significantly lower for the home team.

Schuckers notes, "While many of these conclusions are likely obvious to even casual NHL fans, we believe that we are the first to systematically analyze data to reach these conclusions. We separately analyzed the two NHL seasons to verify that the results are consistent year to year."
