University Trustee Sharee Freeman '76 was part of the U.S. delegation to the Second Meeting of Ministers and High Authorities of Social Development held in Cali, Colombia, in July of 2010. She spoke to the group about the tribal self-governance program she manages at the United States Department of the Interior and how it relates to the Organization of American States (OAS) member countries who have indigenous populations.
A press release from the OAS states that, "The principal subject of the meeting will be the Inter-American Social Protection Network, launched in New York City in September 2009, seeking to become a key instrument of hemispheric cooperation. Furthermore, the meeting will serve to discuss the strengthening of social protection systems through single registry systems of beneficiaries, monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, and fiscal sustainability; partnerships between the public sector and non-governmental organizations, academia, the private sector and community organizations to effectively confront extreme poverty, inequality and vulnerability; and the social policy response to the effects of the financial crisis in the Americas and the Caribbean."
