Student Innovators Invited to Learn about North Country’s ‘Silicon Valley’ on Feb. 11

St. Lawrence University student Emily Webb ’12 had an idea that would help college students communicate with one another about sharing rides. After attending an information session on campus about Clarkson University’s Shipley Center for Innovation, she knew working with them on an independent start-up business as her senior project would be the perfect fit.

Students like Webb, with big ideas for a potential business, or current and future entrepreneurs are invited to learn more at an information session hosted by the Shipley Center for Innovation on Monday, February 11, at 7 p.m. in the Hannon Room in the Sullivan Student Center.

“Working with the Shipley Center for Innovation is the closest thing to being in Silicon Valley that anyone will get in the North Country,” Webb said. “They provide a great deal of support, advisement, coaching, teaching, funding and execution. They have an extensive network, which they tap into for their current projects, and have established up to 19 revenue-generating businesses and are on their way to launching some breakthrough technology and ideas.”

St. Lawrence University’s relationship with the Shipley Center provides assistance and resources to St. Lawrence students interested in developing a creative or innovative business idea.

“I highly recommend utilizing the Shipley Center as the source of discovering the innovative potential that St. Lawrence students possess but may not know about this opportunity to explore it while in college,” Webb says.

For questions about the session or working with the Shipley Center for Innovation, contact Geoff Falen, St. Lawrence’s director of Career Connections, at or 315-229-5768.
