The United Way of Northern New York, which includes St. Lawrence, Jefferson and Lewis Counties, has announced that St. Lawrence University is in its Top 10 for employee campaigns.
In 2009, the St. Lawrence Employee Campaign, coordinated by Priest Associate Professor of Physics Aileen O'Donoghue, raised $15,709; the previous year's total was $9,683.
O'Donoghue noted that the region has been adversely affected by the downturn in the economy, with many employers - including the United Way organization itself - being forced to lay off workers. "I tried to emphasize that no gift is too small," O'Donoghue said. "People don't realize that if we all gave even $2 per week, it really adds up. I hate asking people for money, but it's an important cause and I'm really thrilled that St. Lawrence came through so well."
The agency awarded 2010 grants to 17 local organizations, totalling $81,550.
