Note to Campus: Residence Hall Groundbreaking

Dear Friends,

As you have undoubtedly noticed, we have started work on the new residence hall, which is being built on the former road and parking lot between the Noble Center and the Quad.

For those of you who may be on campus this weekend for Commencement or other activities, I would like to invite you to join the University’s Board of Trustees at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 18, for a “groundbreaking” ceremony to celebrate the project’s start. We plan to gather just outside the Noble Center, on the north end near Romoda Drive. Light refreshments will be served.

As announced previously, we have temporarily fenced off an area surrounding the site and about half of the Quad for safety and to allow room for construction vehicles and equipment.

We are also installing geothermal wells under the ground in the lower section of the Quad to provide sustainable energy to heat and cool the new building. We have stockpiled the topsoil removed for this purpose and will use the same soil to cover the wells once they are in place.

It is important to remind everyone that the Quad will be returned to its full size and use when the project is completed, by the fall 2014 semester. Until then, the portion that is not fenced off will remain available for campus activities. In fact, I’m happy to report that the daily afternoon Ultimate Frisbee games seem to have continued on this section of the Quad without a hitch.

We will continue to update the campus throughout the project through various communications, including the project website at www.stlawu.edu/newreshall. This site includes a link for feedback, where we encourage you to share any questions or comments you may have.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

William L. Fox ’75
