Completion of Profesor's Book of Chinese Tales Celebrated
St. Lawrence University will celebrate the completion of Piskor Professor of English Sidney L. Sondergard's translations of 494 different stories written by 18th-century Chinese writer Pu Songling.
In the six-volume collection of stories, titled Strange Tales from the Liaozhai, readers encounter supernatural creatures, natural disasters, magical aspects of Buddhist and Daoist spirituality and a wide range of Chinese folklore. The books also continue the Chinese tradition of including black-and-white illustrations for a number of the stories.
The first complete English translation features illustrations by St. Lawrence University alumni Alexandra Collins ’09, Leah Farrar ’11, Sarah Lawrence ’12, Megan Williams ’07 and Alexa Unser ’08. Sondergard’s final volume includes illustrations by St. Lawrence alumni Christopher Peterson ’05 and Erik Russell ’08 as well as current student Emma DayBranch ’16. Several illustrations are currently on display at the Brush Art Gallery through Feb. 22.
The gallery will host a book celebration and reading by Sondergard at 4 p.m. Feb. 14 in the Brush Art Gallery. A reception will follow.
