Shawna's Walk for Make-A-Wish Takes Place Sept. 21

CANTON — St. Lawrence University will once again host an annual fundraising walk to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation, helping to make children’s wishes come true.

Organized by the University’s Center for Civic Engagement, the fourth annual Shawna’s Walk for Wishes will be held at St. Lawrence’s Newell Field House from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 21. The entrance fee is $1 or by donation.

The walk began four years ago, after Shawna Cummings, 10, decided to help raise money for the Make-A-Wish foundation. Shawna, who has a rare blood disorder, had her wish granted when she was 5 years old.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to Make-A-Wish of Central New York to grant wishes to St. Lawrence County children who are diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions. Shawna’s Walk has raised over $32,000 for Make-A-Wish, which helped grant two wishes to St. Lawrence County children.

The 3-mile walk will coincide with the Nickelodeon Day of Play, when the cable network station goes off air so children can play. The Kiwanis Club of Potsdam will sponsor a day of play at St. Lawrence before the walk, with children’s games and activities. A silent auction also will take place this year.

Participants may register online as an individual or as a team at maw.kintera.org/shawnaswfw2013.  Participants may also print the pledge form to begin fundraising prior to the walk.
