Introductions and Remarks
Admissions Scholars Day
Daniel F. Sullivan – April 8, 2002

Hello and welcome! I’m Dan Sullivan, St. Lawrence Class of 1965 and President of the University. It’s great to see you all here on this wonderful, quintessentially North Country day. Spring does come to the North Country—just on it’s own time, when it wants to! Some wag once said that in the North Country the four seasons are early winter, mid-winter, late winter and next winter. But we know that they lie!
Your visit today reminds me of the spring of 1961, when I came to St. Lawrence for a program much like the one you’re experiencing today. While accepted also at Cornell, Rochester, Colby, and Oberlin, I knew immediately on that day that this was where I wanted to go to college. I’ve never looked back. St. Lawrence was perfect for me. I hope you’ll conclude that it’s just right for you.
Introduction of Jo Ann Campbell ’86 and Peter F. Hunt ‘75
One of the things we’ve learned is that prospective students and their parents find it very helpful to have the opportunity to hear from alumni who have gone on from St. Lawrence to interesting and distinguished careers, and who have also had time to reflect on how St. Lawrence prepared them. We’re very fortunate to have two such alumni with us today—Jo Ann Campbell ’86 and Peter Hunt ‘75—who will share some of their observations on St. Lawrence with you. Jo Ann is Chief Financial Officer at GE Transportation Systems in Erie, PA, and Peter is President and CEO of Hunt Real Estate Corporation in Williamsville, NY, western New York’s second largest real estate corporation.
Born in Ottawa, Jo Ann lived in Prescott, Ontario when she came to St. Lawrence. As a student, she was on the Dean’s list, and was a Dana Scholar and a President’s Scholar. Elected to Omicron Delta Kappa, our national leadership honorary, she was also captain of the women’s ice hockey team and a member of the All-ECAC team. She studied abroad on our Vienna Program, as well. After receiving her BA from St. Lawrence in economics, she received her MBA from Notre Dame.
As an alumna , Jo Ann has been a Laurentian Admissions Associate, a career advisor (where she offers national and international job opportunities and internships to outstanding St. Lawrence students), co-chair of her reunion fund raising committee, a member of the Alumni Executive Council, and now a University trustee.
At St. Lawrence, Peter was on the Dean’s List, involved in the Thelmothesian Society (St. Lawrence’s student government), and studied abroad in London. As an alumnus, he too has been a member of the Alumni Executive Council, a Laurentian Admissions Associate, a member of his reunion fund raising committee, and a career advisor to our students.
Those of you here from western New York will recognize Peter as a major business force in the Buffalo area, and a significant leader in the Buffalo community. Among many, many forms of community involvement, Peter is Chair of the Board of Trustees of Daemen College.
One of the wisest things Peter ever did, however, was marry Mary Jo, a member of the St. Lawrence Class of 1976. Their oldest daughter, Emily, is now a member of the St. Lawrence Class of 2004. Last spring, Peter sat where you sit, at a reception just like this. I suspect he knows what you are thinking and can help you with the questions he knows you have.
St. Lawrence alumni are passionate about their experience here. That describes both Jo Ann and Peter. But they are also passionate about helping future students have the same kind of St. Lawrence experience they had. That is why they agreed to travel to be with us today.
Please join me in welcoming Jo Ann Campbell and Peter Hunt! Each has some remarks they’d like to make, and then we will take your questions.
Remarks in Closing
Well, there you have it. All I want to say in closing is that, should you accepted students choose St. Lawrence as the place to pursue your liberal arts education, we will work with you day and night to help you get where you want to go. You have an extraordinary adventure ahead. We’d be delighted if you chose to have that adventure with us.
We’d like you now to join us in an informal reception. We can answer any questions you still may have. It’s great to have you here!
